Pan-African citizen consultation: your voice counts, have your say!

The 89th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR continues in Dakar until 21 October, African Human Rights Day. AfricTivistes is carrying its communities’ voices there, gathered through its pan-African citizen consultation. The consultation remains open: citizens, activists, human rights defenders, there is still time to make your realities and proposals heard.
What Dakar says about your concerns
Launched in September with the CitizenLabs, Sahel Activistes and Sahel Résilience, the consultation highlighted five major concerns, presented at the opening of the session. Since then, they have kept coming up in the debates.
Civic space first: at the opening press conference, the ACHPR Chairperson identified reprisals as the main threat to human rights defenders. Accountability and access to justice next: Senegal’s Minister of Justice recalled that there are no human rights without a power that is accountable.
Finally, citizen participation was at the heart of the Senegal National Forum on ECOSOCC-West Africa, where participants called for regional spaces for dialogue and for digital tools as a lever for participation.
The coming days will open two more areas of work: the protection of young women in social movements on Thursday 15 October, and civic space in the Sahel and West Africa on Friday 16 October.
