Eligibility

– Any journalist or blogger residing in Africa who accepts the conditions set out below by AfricTivistes may apply for the call for applications. 

– The fact-check editor +should have at least five (5) years of experience in the field of journalism and fact-checking.

– He/she should have a good knowledge and understanding of migration issues.

Skills

The Fact Check Editor must have knowledge in the fight against misinformation and fact-checking. He/she must: 

– Have information monitoring skills (on migration) on social networks and the media in order to determine whether an alleged information is true or false…

– Be skilled in verifying the accuracy and the objectivity of information published on the networks and media. They must be able to track down the slightest inaccurate claims, erroneous figures, misleading videos or images… 

– Have investigative skills to determine where and when a shot was taken, who really shot it, what story it really tells, etc.

– Be able to retrieve information from databases, perform searches using different software

– Be able to retrieve written, audio, photo and video archives in order to verify the information given

– Be able to call on contacts in the field to investigate

– Have advanced web research techniques

The application package includes

– a letter of motivation to the President of AfricTivistes

– a C.V;

– Three fact-checked pieces (preferably on migration, development or human rights issues).

– at least one reference person and his/her contacts

PS: Applications from the project’s target countries (The Gambia, Guinea, Niger and Mauritania) are strongly encouraged.

Duration of the contract

The contract between the Fact-check Editor and AfricTivistes will last eleven (11) months. It will come into force from January 2023.

Conditions applicable to the fact-check editor

The fact-check editor is required to comply with the obligations in the contract with AfricTivistes. The contract between the parties, produced in two copies, states that the selected candidate will coordinate the fact-checking desk. His/her work will be to verify information on migration and combat misinformation and disinformation. The contract also determines the modalities of collaboration.

The fact-checking editor will verify the accuracy and the objectivity of the information published on social networks and the media.

The fact-checking job requires an inquisitive mind and a good knowledge of web research/data processing software and a good command of English is an advantage.

The fact-checking editor will also supervise the day-to-day journalistic work of the two content producers assigned to him/her on a monthly basis.

Fact-checked productions are the exclusive property of AfricTivistes. 

AfricTivistes is the sole owner of the broadcasting and publication rights of the articles produced under this contract. It has the prerogative to publish them on all its own and partner platforms.

The fact-checker authorises AfricTivistes to use his/her name, image (provided by him/her) and contacts in the presentation of the project and the ensuing communication.

He/she must agree to participate in the Inception workshop that will be organised for the project between 15 and 20 December. 

Obligations of AfricTivistes

AfricTivistes will provide the fact-check editor with all the information and material he/she needs to carry out his/her work in a timely manner. 

AfricTivistes shall pay a monthly salary to the Fact Check Editor for eleven (11) months in return for his services.

AfricTivistes undertakes to respect the confidentiality of the data of applicants to the call for the position of Fact Check Editor.

AfricTivistes guarantees the confidentiality of communications and contractual relations between the Fact-checking editor and the organisation.
