AfricTivistes joins the Coalition on Information and Democracy
AfricTivistes has joined the Coalition on Information and Democracy, a platform dedicated to strengthening dialogue between civil society and policymakers to address challenges related to digital information. This contributes to the organisation’s efforts to promote democracy.
As of October this year, AfricTivistes has become the 50th organisation in the world to join the Coalition on Information and Democracy since its establishment in 2011. This international network brings together members committed to the protection of fundamental democratic values, press freedom, and human rights.
The Coalition serves as a privileged space for collaboration and knowledge sharing, focusing on political analysis and research concerning the global information ecosystem. Its mission is to promote the establishment of effective policies in response to challenges related to the flow of information in the digital space.
By joining the Coalition on Information and Democracy, AfricTivistes, a major player in the defence of human rights and the promotion of democracy in Africa, continues its commitment to promoting the democratisation of information and ensuring high-quality information.
Indeed, AfricTivistes has initiated several projects and initiatives since 2015 aimed at fostering an inclusive and responsible digital environment to strengthen democracy and citizen participation in Africa.
In October 2023, the seminar on Information and Democracy organised by AfricTivistes provided a unique platform for key stakeholders from civil society, government, media, and the information and communication technology (ICT) sector to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the dissemination and evolution of the information ecosystem in the digital age. These discussions culminated in a Memorandum on Information and Democracy.
It is important to note that the Forum on Information and Democracy, inaugurated in 2019, is the operational platform for this partnership endorsed by 54 states, aimed at establishing clear principles for safeguarding the integrity of information in the digital age. This forum particularly focuses on the impact of digital information networks on human rights and democratic institutions while proposing regulatory and self-regulatory solutions tailored to these contemporary challenges.
Moreover, AfricTivistes’ involvement in this Coalition contributes to the global efforts aimed at protecting democracy.
With this new momentum, AfricTivistes is firmly committed to enhancing synergies and contributing to a future where information serves as both a tool of democracy and a vector for human rights, within a secure and responsible digital environment.
